Cheddar Valley Pavillion: Public Pavilion, Shortlisted Proposal

Denman+Gould’s public pavilion was a shortlisted public art proposal for the Cheddar Valley. Cheddar Reservoir’s wintering waterfowl populations make it a Site of Special Scientific Interest. A multi-purpose platform for birdwatching and observing nature at the reservoir and in the surrounding landscape is at the heart of our design.  Inspired by mountain shelters and hideaways, our proposal features a multi-purpose architectural space that can be used variously as a seating platform, a walkway, and terraces that children can climb on, play on and make dens in. Our design features steps and a rippling, gently sloping terrace on either side of the platform, reflecting the amphitheatre-like terraces of the reservoir. The structure, which has a geometric roof with cladded sides, is designed to cast ever-changing shadows onto the ground, adding interest and movement throughout the day. To enhance residents’ and users’ experience of the location, we paid close attention to the positioning of our work and developed a functional architectural sculpture that wouldn’t simply be visually striking, it would also encourage people to engage with, and spend time in, this unique landscape.
